Willien is a dedicated regional nurse who oversees 18 Assisted Living communities across seven different states. With 12 years of nursing experience, his career has been deeply rooted in senior living, and his passion for empowering healthcare workers and advocating for seniors, especially those living with dementia, is at the forefront of his work.
Willien has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.
Innovating Solutions: Developing a Medication Aide Program
In 2023, Willien took a significant step in addressing staffing challenges by creating a state-approved Medication Aide program in Tennessee. This program was designed to alleviate the strain on nursing staff within the three facilities he supports and to empower non-nursing staff by introducing them to nursing as a potential career path. The program has already led to the licensing of three state-approved Medication Aides in Tennessee. Remarkably, Willien’s program became the 17th approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing and only the 3rd within the Nashville area, all despite his lack of formal background in nursing education.
A Passion for Senior Care and Dementia Advocacy
Willien’s commitment to advocating for seniors, particularly those living with dementia, is demonstrated through his credentials as a Board-Certified Gerontology Nurse and a Certified Dementia Practitioner. His dedication to improving care for seniors is not just limited to his nursing responsibilities; he also helps develop state-specific policies, procedures, and tools to ensure that the facilities he supports meet state compliance and achieve successful survey outcomes. Ultimately, his goal is to guarantee that seniors receive the best care possible.
Supporting Future Nurses and Promoting a Culture of Care
In his previous role as Director of Nursing, Willien actively supported staff members who were pursuing nursing education by offering mentorship and guidance. His efforts helped aspiring nurses succeed in their studies while maintaining high-quality care within the facility. He believes that nursing is more than just a profession; it is a passion and a calling. His leadership and advocacy extend beyond the facility level, as he represents the healthcare workers and nursing leaders in the communities he supports at the corporate level.
Dedication Through Challenges: Leadership During the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Willien’s dedication to his profession and his residents shone through. As a Director of Nursing at the time, he went above and beyond, even sleeping in the facility to ensure continuity of care when his staff became ill. His commitment to maintaining high-quality care during such a critical time did not go unnoticed, leading to his promotion to his current regional role just a year and a half later. His leadership during the pandemic is a testament to his unwavering passion for nursing and the well-being of those in his care.
Embracing Technology in Senior Care
Beyond his hands-on nursing work, Willien is also passionate about integrating technology into healthcare, particularly in long-term care and senior living facilities. He sees technology as a key tool for improving efficiency, enhancing care delivery, and ensuring that residents receive the best possible care.
A Multi-State Nursing Leader
Willien currently holds RN licenses in Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, Florida, Minnesota, Arizona, Indiana, and Illinois, allowing him to support facilities across a broad region. His leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to both his staff and the seniors he serves continue to make a lasting impact in the field of senior living.
