Jessica Schomer, BSN, RN, SCRN

For Jessica, nursing was never simply a career choice it was inspired by a life-changing experience that forever shaped her perspective on compassion and care. After witnessing the extraordinary support nurses provided to her brother and family following his traumatic brain injury, Jessica discovered the profound impact nurses can have during life’s most difficult moments. Today, as a 2026 Illinois Nurses Foundation 40 Under 40 Awardee, she continues to honor that inspiration by delivering compassionate, patient-centered care while leading with empathy, resilience, and purpose.

Inspired by Compassion

Jessica’s journey into nursing began at just 17 years old after her brother experienced a traumatic brain injury. Watching nurses care not only for him but also for her entire family during an incredibly challenging time inspired her to pursue a career dedicated to helping others. That experience became the foundation of the nurse she strives to be every day.

Throughout her career, Jessica has served in stroke neurology, case management, utilization review, and now as a House Supervisor at Morris Hospital. As she continues pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner, each step has reinforced her belief that nursing extends far beyond treating illness, it’s about listening, advocating, and caring for the whole person.

A Heart for Advocacy and Healing

Jessica is especially passionate about caring for older adults and individuals living with neurological conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injuries. Whether coordinating complex care, supporting fellow nurses, leading hospital operations, or simply taking the time to listen, she is committed to ensuring every patient feels respected, valued, and genuinely cared for.

Her own experiences navigating hardship have strengthened her empathy and deepened her commitment to advocating for those who may feel vulnerable or unheard. Jessica believes that every interaction is an opportunity to provide comfort, build trust, and improve the lives of those she serves.

Leading with Purpose, Living with Heart

Outside of nursing, Jessica is a proud mother of two, and the compassion, resilience, and determination she brings to her family are the same qualities that define her professional life. As she looks toward the future, she hopes to continue advancing patient advocacy, mentoring the next generation of nurses, and creating lasting change through compassionate leadership.

The Illinois Nurses Foundation proudly recognizes Jessica Schomer as a 2026 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader for her unwavering dedication to patient advocacy, neurological care, compassionate leadership, and serving others with empathy. Her commitment to caring for patients and families with dignity and kindness continues to make a meaningful impact on the nursing profession and the communities she serves.
