Illinois Nurses Foundation is proud to celebrate Board Member Dr. Colleen Morley on being named the Case Management Society of America’s (CMSA) Case Manager of the Year. This prestigious national recognition honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the field of case management and have demonstrated excellence in improving patient care, advancing healthcare delivery, and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Morley has exemplified the values of nursing through leadership, advocacy, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to patients and families. We recently spoke with Dr. Morley about this incredible honor, her passion for case management, and her vision for the future of nursing.
Receiving a National Honor
What was your initial reaction when you learned you had received this honor?
“My initial reaction was one of genuine surprise and deep gratitude. Case management is a profession filled with extraordinary individuals who work tirelessly every day to improve patient outcomes, navigate complex healthcare systems, and advocate for those who often have no voice. To be recognized by my peers through CMSA is incredibly humbling.
My first thoughts immediately went to my family, who supported me throughout my career journey, as well as the many mentors, colleagues, teams, and patients who have shaped my professional path. This award truly reflects the collective efforts of countless professionals who have worked alongside me throughout my career.”
What does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?
“Personally, this recognition affirms the values that have guided me throughout my nursing and leadership career: service, advocacy, lifelong learning, and a commitment to improving healthcare systems for patients and families. Professionally, it represents an opportunity to elevate awareness of the critical role case managers play across the continuum of care. Case management often occurs behind the scenes, perhaps the best-kept secret in healthcare, yet it is essential to ensuring safe transitions, reducing healthcare disparities, improving quality outcomes, and supporting patients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. I hope this recognition shines a spotlight not only on my work but on the profession as a whole.”
A Career Dedicated to Improving Healthcare
Dr. Morley currently serves as Associate Chief Clinical Operations Officer for Continuum of Care at UI Health in Chicago, where she oversees case management, social work, utilization management, and patient throughput initiatives.
Throughout her career, she has focused on improving healthcare delivery through process improvement, quality outcomes, care coordination, and leadership development.
Beyond her operational responsibilities, Dr. Morley has contributed extensively to the profession through writing, research, education, advocacy, and volunteer leadership. She has authored several books on case management, conducted research on professional identity and health literacy, presented nationally on care coordination and healthcare transformation, and served in leadership roles with CMSA, ANA-Illinois, the Illinois Nurses Foundation, and other professional organizations.
“My passion has always been helping both patients and professionals navigate increasingly complex healthcare systems more effectively.”
Why Case Management Matters
When asked what inspires her most about case management, Dr. Morley shared that the profession’s greatest strength is its ability to bring together every piece of a patient’s healthcare journey.
“Healthcare is becoming increasingly specialized and complex, and patients often struggle to navigate that complexity alone. Case managers serve as advocates, educators, problem-solvers, and system navigators who help bridge those gaps.”
Her passion is also deeply personal.
“I often tell the story of my parents attempting to navigate the healthcare system with an active 18-month-old and a newborn with multiple serious medical issues back in 1967, before the modern case management model. I remember my childhood being punctuated by doctor visits, hospital stays, therapy appointments, and trips to the pharmacy. As a case manager, I get to make that experience better than what my family went through all those years ago.”
Advice for Future Nurse Leaders
Dr. Morley encourages nurses interested in leadership or case management to remain curious and continue learning throughout their careers.
“Remain curious, embrace lifelong learning, and never underestimate the value of relationship-building. Some of the most effective leaders are not those with the loudest voices but those who listen carefully, build trust, and inspire collaboration.”
She also encourages nurses to seek opportunities beyond their comfort zones.
“Volunteer for projects, join professional organizations, serve on committees, pursue certifications, participate in quality improvement or research, and find mentors who challenge you to grow. Leadership is not defined by a title; it is demonstrated through influence, service, and a commitment to making things better for patients and colleagues alike.”
Dr. Morley reminds nurses that their clinical expertise is one of their greatest strengths.
“Nurses bring a unique perspective that combines clinical knowledge, systems thinking, advocacy, and compassion, qualities that healthcare organizations need now more than ever.”
The Impact of Illinois Nurses Foundation and ANA-Illinois
As a member of the Illinois Nurses Foundation Board of Directors and ANA-Illinois Legislative Committee, Dr. Morley says the organization has played an important role in her professional growth.
“Illinois Nurses Foundation and ANA-Illinois has provided an invaluable platform for professional growth, leadership development, and advocacy. Through my service on the Board of Directors and Legislative Committee, I have had opportunities to engage in healthcare policy discussions, advocate for nurses and patients, and collaborate with nursing leaders across the state.”
She adds that one of the most rewarding aspects of her involvement has been helping shape conversations around issues affecting both nursing and healthcare delivery.
“Advocacy is a natural extension of nursing practice, and ANA-Illinois and Illinois Nurses Foundation has reinforced the importance of using our collective voice to influence positive change. The relationships, mentorship, and experiences gained have been instrumental in my development as both a nurse leader and healthcare executive.”
Looking to the Future
Dr. Morley is optimistic about where healthcare is headed and believes nurses and case managers will play an increasingly vital role.
“Healthcare is constantly changing, and I am most excited about the growing recognition of care coordination, population health management, and interdisciplinary collaboration as essential components of high-quality care.”
She also sees tremendous opportunity for nurses to lead healthcare transformation.
“I am excited about the expanding role of nurses and case managers in shaping healthcare policy, advancing health equity, leveraging artificial intelligence responsibly, and improving care across the continuum.”
While technology continues to evolve, Dr. Morley believes one thing will remain constant.
“The future belongs to healthcare teams that combine innovation with humanity. Nurses and case managers are uniquely positioned to lead that transformation, and I am optimistic about the impact our profession will continue to make in the years ahead.”
