With five years in her current position, Mary has not only gained the trust of her colleagues but also the admiration of her peers for her remarkable contributions to nursing and professional development at the hospital.

Mary has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.

A Leader in Professional Development

Mary’s journey into leadership took a significant turn when she joined the hospital’s Professional Development Committee as co-chair. Mary Ann Brooks, who nominated Mary, recalls the challenge of revitalizing the committee amidst major organizational changes. Mary’s decision to take on the co-chair role proved to be a turning point. Right from the start, it was evident that Mary’s involvement would help the committee thrive.

Working closely with Mary, Brooks noticed her natural ability to foster a positive and supportive environment among her peers. Mary’s kind and approachable demeanor made her a trusted leader, and staff members on her unit felt comfortable bringing concerns and ideas to her attention. Mary’s leadership style, characterized by empathy and effective communication, has earned her the respect of her team and the recognition that she is a rising star in nursing leadership.

Balancing Multiple Roles

In addition to her responsibilities as a clinical lead, Mary is pursuing an Advanced Practice Degree in nursing while balancing her role as a mother to two young children. Her position involves scheduling, staff peer reviews, charge nurse duties, and making sure that new team members feel welcome and supported in the fast-paced environment of the orthopedic floor.

Beyond her clinical duties, Mary is deeply involved in various committees and initiatives that contribute to the overall success of the hospital. These include:

  • Magnet Ambassador
  • Leadership Committee
  • Nursing Coordinating Council
  • ExCEL Steering Committee
  • Rocking 4 Research Steering Committee
  • Professional Development Committee

Innovative Projects and Community Impact

Mary’s leadership has extended into numerous impactful projects. One of her most notable contributions is spearheading her unit’s “turn-team” initiative, aimed at reducing patient pressure injuries. Her leadership and guidance helped improve patient outcomes and enhanced the standard of care provided on her unit.

As a member of the Professional Development Committee, Mary played a key role in launching the first-ever Professional Development Day at Advocate Christ Medical Center. This event showcased nursing schools, nursing associations, the DAISY Award program, ExCEL Program, and numerous community engagement opportunities, providing a platform for nurses to connect, learn, and grow professionally.

Her commitment to community service is also evident in her organization of a successful Christmas gift collection for refugee children at a Ukrainian school in Chicago. This initiative showcased Mary’s compassionate nature and her dedication to making a difference both inside and outside the hospital.

Elevating Nursing Recognition: DAISY Award Leadership

Mary’s passion for recognizing nursing excellence led to a major increase in DAISY Award nominations at her site. Through innovative strategies, her team achieved a 618% increase in nominations from the previous year. Mary’s work doesn’t stop at nominating nurses; she is also responsible for uploading nomination forms and organizing individual award celebrations. This year, during Nurses Week, she introduced the idea of a DAISY Tea Party, further emphasizing her commitment to celebrating the achievements of her fellow nurses.
