For Jennifer Johnson, nursing is a testament to the power of perseverance, purpose, and believing in yourself. Although her path to becoming a nurse didn’t unfold as she originally planned, every challenge along the way strengthened her determination and ultimately led her to a career dedicated to developing future nursing leaders. As a 2026 Illinois Nurses Foundation 40 Under 40 Awardee, Jennifer continues to make a lasting impact by empowering nurses to grow, succeed, and deliver exceptional patient care.
Turning Setbacks into Opportunities
Jennifer’s journey to nursing began at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she initially planned to pursue a career in healthcare. When she was not accepted into the nursing program during her junior year, she faced an unexpected setback that could have changed the course of her future. Instead of giving up, she chose to adapt.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies while gaining valuable experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant, allowing her to confirm that nursing was truly her calling. That experience strengthened her resolve, and she later completed a post-baccalaureate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Edgewood College. Looking back, Jennifer believes every step of her journey happened for a reason and reinforced the importance of perseverance, resilience, and trusting the process.
Discovering the Power of Professional Development
After relocating to Chicago, Jennifer began her nursing career as a staff registered nurse, where she spent four and a half years caring for patients while building a strong clinical foundation. She later transitioned into a clinic manager role, where she discovered a new passion, helping nurses develop their knowledge, confidence, and leadership abilities.
Recognizing the far-reaching impact of professional development, Jennifer joined the Department of Professional Nursing Practice at Rush University Medical Center, where she now serves as a Program Manager RN. In this role, she supports the education and professional growth of nurses across the organization, believing that investing in nurses ultimately strengthens patient care and improves the health of the communities they serve.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Jennifer is passionate about mentoring others and creating opportunities for nurses to thrive throughout their careers. She finds fulfillment in helping colleagues build confidence, strengthen clinical expertise, and discover their own leadership potential.
As she continues pursuing her Master of Nursing in Clinical Nurse Leadership, Jennifer remains committed to lifelong learning and advancing nursing through education, quality improvement, and professional development. She is deeply grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and leaders who have supported her journey and hopes to pay that encouragement forward by helping future nurses realize that setbacks do not define success, perseverance does.
