Michelle Grijalva, RN, BSN
For Michelle Grijalva, nursing is more than a profession, it is a calling rooted in compassion, resilience, and advocacy. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to caring for women with empathy while striving to eliminate barriers to equitable healthcare. As a 2026 Illinois Nurses Foundation 40 Under 40 Awardee, Michelle continues to transform personal challenges into purpose, using her experiences to educate, empower, and support women through every stage of life.
A Passion for Women’s Health
Michelle’s nursing journey began 14 years ago as a Certified Nursing Assistant on a surgical orthopedics unit while pursuing her Associate Degree in Nursing. After earning her ADN, she gained valuable experience in acute rehabilitation before completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and returning to bedside nursing on a medical-surgical unit at Advocate Christ Hospital.
Her career eventually led her to a privately owned obstetrics and gynecology practice, where she discovered her true passion for women’s health. Over the past six years, she has cared for women across the lifespan, strengthening her commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care. She is currently completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree specializing in Women’s Health and looks forward to serving patients as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
Advocating for Every Woman’s Voice
Growing up as the daughter of a mother with limited English proficiency, Michelle witnessed firsthand the challenges many families face when navigating the healthcare system. Those experiences inspired her to become a bilingual provider committed to delivering culturally responsive care and ensuring women feel informed, respected, and empowered to participate in their healthcare decisions.
She is also passionate about reducing disparities in women’s health and addressing the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within Latino communities. Michelle believes every woman deserves access to compassionate care that acknowledges not only her physical health, but also her emotional and cultural experiences.
Finding Strength Through Experience
One of the most transformative chapters of Michelle’s life came after being diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. While undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and egg preservation and navigating medically induced menopause at just 32 years old, she continued working while pursuing her doctoral education.
Rather than allowing those challenges to define her, Michelle chose to let them deepen her understanding of the women she serves. Her personal experience has given her unique insight into the physical and emotional realities of breast cancer treatment, fertility preservation, and menopause. As a future Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, she hopes to educate women about the importance of early detection, encourage them to advocate for their health, and ensure no woman feels alone during one of life’s most difficult journeys.
