For Meghan Battista-Mueller, nursing has always been about more than providing exceptional clinical care, it has been about listening, connecting, and walking beside patients during life’s most difficult moments. Guided by the principle of “listening with the ear of your heart,” she has built a career rooted in compassion, advocacy, and whole-person care. As a 2026 Illinois Nurses Foundation 40 Under 40 Awardee, Meghan continues to transform the cancer care experience by supporting patients with empathy, expertise, and unwavering presence.
Listening with the Ear of the Heart
Meghan’s nursing journey began at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University, where she first embraced the philosophy of “listening with the ear of your heart” a lesson that would become the cornerstone of her career. She later earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Minnesota in 2019, building upon a strong clinical foundation established as a medical-surgical oncology nurse and later as a chemotherapy infusion nurse at the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center.
After completing her doctorate, Meghan moved to Illinois to pursue her passion for oncology as a Nurse Practitioner specializing in breast oncology. Throughout her career at Rush MD Anderson Cancer Center, she has remained committed to treating each patient as a whole person, combining advanced oncology expertise with compassionate, holistic care. Her Oncology Nursing Certification and Certificate in Holistic and Integrative Practices reflect her belief that healing extends far beyond medical treatment alone.
Walking Beside Patients Through Every Step
Meghan is passionate about supporting patients throughout every stage of their cancer journey from diagnosis and chemotherapy to survivorship and metastatic care. She understands that patients need more than treatment plans; they need education, emotional support, advocacy, and someone willing to stand beside them through uncertainty.
Her dedication extends beyond direct patient care through mentoring Doctor of Nursing Practice students, precepting new nurse practitioners, leading educational programs on breast health and survivorship, and advancing quality improvement initiatives focused on sexual health resources, nonfertility, and chemotherapy education. By improving both clinical care and patient education, Meghan is helping create a more compassionate and comprehensive experience for individuals facing cancer.
Compassion That Leaves a Lasting Impact
One of the defining moments of Meghan’s career came early in her nursing journey while caring for a postoperative patient who had just learned his cancer had spread and that his time was limited. By remaining present, managing his symptoms, and simply listening to both him and his family, she discovered the profound impact nurses can have during life’s most difficult conversations.
That experience, later recognized with a March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award, continues to shape her approach to nursing. It serves as a reminder that while clinical expertise is essential, it is compassion, presence, and genuine human connection that often leave the greatest impression.
Outside of work, Meghan enjoys spending time with her husband, their toddler son, and their beloved Labrador mix. Whether exploring Chicago’s restaurants, cooking, traveling, reading, or enjoying the outdoors, she finds balance in the moments that keep her grounded and remind her of what matters most bringing that same presence and compassion to every patient and family she serves.
