Kathleen has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.

A Visionary Leader in Critical Care

Kathie transitioned from a Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse to the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in 2019. Since then, she has distinguished herself as an innovative leader, driving advancements in quality care and evidence-based practice. One of her most impactful contributions is the creation of the Adult Critical Care (ACC) Residency Program. This program supports new graduate nurses entering the demanding field of critical care by offering comprehensive training in areas such as anticipatory interventions, lab interpretation, and emergency management. Beyond technical skills, the program prioritizes participants’ well-being through roundtable discussions and yoga with meditation.

This residency not only accelerates the professional growth of novice nurses but also fosters leadership opportunities for experienced ICU nurses who facilitate the program. This dual focus on professional development and personal resilience underscores Kathie’s commitment to the holistic growth of the nursing workforce.

Driving Innovation in Patient Care

Kathie’s contributions extend beyond nurse development. She plays a vital role in the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, ensuring staff are well-prepared to manage complex patients requiring advanced therapies such as ventricular assist devices (VADs), intra-aortic balloon pumps, and ECMO therapy. Her efforts equip nurses with the skills and confidence to deliver exceptional care to critically ill patients.

Kathie also takes a systems-level approach to quality improvement. She leads a hospital-wide initiative to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and actively champions better outcomes in sepsis management and the prevention of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). Her passion for these efforts reflects her ability to address the multifaceted challenges of critical care nursing.

Advancing Global Nursing Practice

Kathie’s influence reaches far beyond her organization. As a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), she contributes to the ICU Liberation Initiative, an effort to enhance global bedside nursing practices. By focusing on the recognition and prevention of PICS, she helps shape policies and practices that improve the lives of ICU patients worldwide. Additionally, Kathie collaborates with healthcare companies as a clinical advisor, lending her expertise to product development and implementation.

Compassion at the Core of Leadership

Caring is the heart of nursing, and Kathie embodies this principle in every interaction. She provides steadfast support to new nurses, working one-on-one to ensure their clinical decision-making is sound and that they are navigating the emotional challenges of the profession. Her mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and resilience among her colleagues, creating an environment where excellence can thrive.

Kathie’s ability to balance innovation, advocacy, and compassion makes her a role model for nurses at all stages of their careers. Whether mentoring a new graduate, leading hospital-wide initiatives, or contributing to global healthcare improvements, Kathie consistently demonstrates the qualities of a true nursing leader.
