Melissa Zofkie, BSN, RN-BC
For Melissa Zofkie, leadership is measured not by personal achievements, but by the success of those she helps along the way. Throughout her nursing career, she has been passionate about creating opportunities for others to grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and fostering environments where nurses feel supported and empowered. As a 2026 Illinois Nurses Foundation 40 Under 40 Awardee, Melissa continues to strengthen the nursing profession by investing in the people who make exceptional patient care possible.
Growing Into Leadership
Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saint Xavier University after beginning her healthcare journey as a Patient Care Associate at Advocate Christ Medical Center while attending nursing school. After becoming a registered nurse, she gained experience in the Float Pool before finding her professional home on the Short Stay Unit.
For nearly five years, Melissa has served as the Clinical Team Lead for the Short Stay Unit, where she has combined her passion for patient care with leadership, mentorship, and professional development. Committed to lifelong learning, she plans to continue her own educational journey by pursuing a master’s degree in leadership to further expand her ability to inspire and support future nurse leaders.
Empowering Others to Thrive
Melissa believes one of the greatest responsibilities of a nurse leader is helping others recognize their own potential. She encourages nurses to pursue specialty certifications, participate in professional advancement opportunities, and continuously seek new ways to grow throughout their careers.
As Co-Chair of the Professional Development Committee, she has worked alongside colleagues to create meaningful educational opportunities that empower nurses to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and achieve their professional goals. Watching others succeed has become one of the most rewarding aspects of her career and continues to inspire her leadership philosophy.
Celebrating Excellence Every Day
One of Melissa’s proudest professional milestones was being recognized as Clinical Team Lead of the Year in 2025, an honor that reaffirmed her commitment to serving others through compassionate leadership. She is equally proud of her involvement with the DAISY Committee, where she helps recognize the extraordinary contributions of nurses and healthcare team members.
Melissa believes that recognition has the power to inspire, motivate, and strengthen the nursing profession. By celebrating the accomplishments of others, she helps cultivate a culture where nurses feel valued, appreciated, and encouraged to continue making a difference.
Outside of work, Melissa’s greatest joy is her family. As the proud mother of two energetic boys, a dog mom to two golden retrievers, and the wife of a firefighter and paramedic, she understands the importance of resilience, teamwork, and compassion both at home and in the workplace. These experiences continue to shape the leader she is today and reinforce her commitment to helping others grow, succeed, and feel supported throughout their nursing journey.
The Illinois Nurses Foundation proudly recognizes Melissa Zofkie as a 2026 40 Under 40 Awardee for her dedication to nursing leadership, professional development, mentorship, and recognizing the achievements of others. Through her servant leadership and commitment to empowering nurses, she continues to inspire excellence and strengthen the future of the nursing profession.
