Heather Heicher APRN, PMN-BC is a Nurse Practitioner at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. She has been nominated for the Illinois Nurses Foundation’s 40 Under 40 Award for her outstanding contributions to nursing and her community

Heather has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.

Pioneering Pain Management in a Rural Setting

As the first Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the Center for Interventional Pain, Heather has been instrumental in developing new policies and procedures to enhance patient care. Recognizing the challenges of a rural clinic setting, Heather innovated a clinic workflow that allowed physicians more time for procedures while increasing patient follow-up frequency. This approach has significantly boosted patient satisfaction and improved access to care.

Heather also serves as a knowledge resource, helping to ensure evidence-based practices within the clinic. She regularly reviews and updates clinic policies to align with the latest research and serves on both the research council and Code Blue committees. As the only APRN in the region with ANCC certification in Pain Management Nursing, Heather sets the standard for specialized care in pain management.

Mentor, Educator, and Advocate for Future Nurses

Heather is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of nurses and healthcare professionals. She has served as a preceptor for nursing and APRN students, as well as a mentor for nurses pursuing advanced certifications. In addition, she frequently lectures on pain management for local nursing schools, sharing her expertise with students preparing to enter the field.

Heather has also established a nursing scholarship at Eastern Illinois University to support nursing students in offsetting the costs of their education, demonstrating her commitment to easing the financial burdens of future healthcare providers. Her advocacy extends beyond her own clinic as she lobbied Medicare to revise outdated policies on pain management treatments, resulting in expanded access to necessary procedures for her patients.

A Dedicated Community Leader

Heather’s impact reaches far beyond the clinic, as she is actively involved in numerous community service initiatives. As a member of the Women Connected group, she helps fund health initiatives such as scholarships for patients attending the Center for Healthy Living, providing resources for children’s health programs in local schools, and funding dental services for underserved community members.

Her volunteer efforts are widely recognized, as she participates in events like the “Unforgettable Night” prom for special needs community members, annual Thanksgiving meal services, and the Back to School Bash, where she provides school supplies, haircuts, and dental exams for local children. Heather’s dedication to her community was recognized when she received the 20 Under 40 Coles County Illinois ClassE community business award in 2024.

Heather Heicher: Compassionate Care That Goes Above and Beyond

Heather embodies the true spirit of nursing by focusing on the whole person. She takes time to ensure her patients understand their health conditions and treatment options and makes a point to inquire about their life challenges. This compassionate approach has led Heather to cover medication costs, purchase shoes, provide food, and coordinate transportation for patients in need.
