As a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner and Lead Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) for Heart Failure and Cardiac-Obstetrics at Advocate Lutheran General, Irina Evans’s impact on patient care and the professional development of her peers is profound. Her contributions not only help shape innovative programs but also inspire others around her through her leadership, empathy, and dedication.
Irina has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.
A Lifelong Passion for Nursing
Irina’s journey in nursing began 15 years ago as a Registered Nurse, but her passion for healthcare started even earlier. Growing up in Bulgaria, Irina’s calling to become a nurse was ignited at the age of nine when she witnessed the profound impact a nurse had on her family. As her grandfather was dying, the nurse not only provided compassionate care for him but also comforted Irina’s family by explaining his treatment plan. This experience instilled in Irina a desire to provide holistic care that not only prioritizes patients but also embraces their families.
Innovating in Heart Care
In her role as Lead APN, Irina has been instrumental in developing the Cardio-Obstetrics Program in collaboration with hospital leadership and cardiologists. This program addresses the unique cardiovascular needs of pregnant patients, creating an avenue for specialized care. Her leadership extends beyond program development, as she plays an active role in ensuring that the Heart Failure Team is integrated into the hospital’s workflow, consulting with hospitalists and emergency staff to deliver timely interventions and continuity of care post-discharge.
As part of her many responsibilities, Irina also serves as the LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) educator, ensuring that patients with advanced heart failure are given the support they need to manage their condition effectively.
Shaping the Next Generation of APNs
Irina’s leadership goes beyond patient care. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the orientation program for new Cardiology APNs at Advocate Lutheran General, ensuring that they are equipped with the knowledge, support, and learning opportunities necessary to succeed. Her commitment to high-quality, safe, and effective care is mirrored in her efforts to foster a supportive environment for her colleagues.

Irina’s dedication has earned her numerous accolades throughout her career. Among her most notable achievements are:

Giving Back to the Community
Irina’s passion for service extends beyond the hospital. She regularly volunteers her time and expertise at the Ronald McDonald House and has been involved in the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Additionally, she has served as part of the medical staff for the Chicago Marathon, demonstrating her commitment to improving community health.
Commitment to Professional Development
A member of Lewis University’s Sigma Theta Tau International Epsilon Upsilon Chapter, Irina is also affiliated with key organizations that reflect her dedication to advancing the nursing profession. These include:
- American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
