A Visionary Leader in Healthcare
Mary Bowman (they/them) has more than a decade of nursing experience specializing in sexual and reproductive health. From their earliest days as a healthcare professional, Mary has worked tirelessly to ensure that healthcare is accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all. Their journey began at the Chicago Women’s Health Center, a legendary feminist health collective, where they were a key part of the inaugural nurse practitioner team that launched the center’s primary care program. This foundational experience fueled their passion for reproductive justice and LGBTQ healthcare.
Mary’s impact grew even further when they became the first Clinical Director of Sexual and Reproductive Health at Howard Brown Health, the largest LGBTQ health center in the Midwest. Under their leadership, Howard Brown Health flourished, serving as a beacon of care for countless LGBTQ individuals in need of compassionate, inclusive medical services.
Breaking New Ground in Gender-Affirming Care
In 2020, Dr. Bowman took another groundbreaking step in their career, becoming the first Program Director of Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy at Planned Parenthood of Illinois. In this role, they supported 17 clinics across the state, ensuring that transgender individuals had access to affirming and comprehensive care. Their clinical expertise spans many critical areas of healthcare, including preventative and primary care, STI and HIV prevention and treatment, contraception, abortion services, gender-affirming hormone therapy, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction.
Through their work, Mary has not only provided care to countless patients but also helped transform the healthcare landscape by making it more inclusive, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of marginalized populations.
Educator and Advocate for the Future
In addition to their clinical work, Mary is an Associate Professor at DePaul University’s School of Nursing. As a dedicated educator, they are deeply committed to training the next generation of nurses to be forward-thinking, culturally competent, and trans-inclusive in their approach to patient care. Mary ensures that their students are prepared to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare with empathy, respect, and a focus on justice.
At a time when reproductive healthcare is under attack, we need leaders like Dr. Bowman to stand at the forefront, advocating for equity and the rights of all patients. Their advocacy has been pivotal in shaping policies and practices that promote health care justice and equality, especially for the LGBTQ community.
