INF 40 Under 40 Awardee: Jennifer Maffucci

Jennifer Maffucci’s nursing journey has been defined by her love of learning, her passion for teaching, and her unwavering belief in the power of communication. Since earning her BS in Nursing from Purdue University in 2008, Jennifer has consistently bridged the worlds of clinical practice and nursing education, shaping not only how care is delivered, but how it’s taught.

From the Bedside to the Classroom

Jennifer began her career working with adult patients in hospital settings. While she enjoyed the fast pace and complexity of clinical care, she quickly discovered a deeper calling: teaching. Whether she was guiding patients through recovery or mentoring new nurses on the unit, Jennifer found immense fulfillment in helping others grow in confidence and skill. That passion led her to pursue her master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati, where she became a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Educator, and eventually to the University of Rochester, where she earned her Doctor of Education (EdD) with a focus on teaching and curriculum. Along the way, she also earned a certificate in online teaching, a skillset that proved essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, when virtual learning became the norm.

Fostering Growth Through Communication

For nearly 15 years, Jennifer has balanced clinical practice with teaching, finding purpose in both settings. In 2019, she joined the faculty at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where she now teaches full-time and continues to innovate in the classroom. Her research began with a focus on clinical judgment development but has since evolved to center on communication specifically, how nurses communicate with patients, families, and each other. “A single conversation,” she notes, “can change a patient’s experience or a student’s trajectory.” Through her work, she aims to equip students with not just clinical competence, but with the emotional intelligence and communication skills that build trust, empathy, and transformative care.

Building the Future of Nursing

Jennifer’s approach to education is rooted in authenticity, connection, and a deep respect for the nursing profession. She empowers students to lead with both knowledge and heart, preparing them to meet the challenges of modern healthcare with confidence.

The Illinois Nurses Foundation proudly celebrates Jennifer Maffucci as a 2025 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader for her dedication to empowering the next generation, innovative healing research, nursing education, and leadership.
