INF 40 Under 40 Awardee: Lexxie Gramke

For Lexxie Gramke, nursing is more than a profession, it’s a lifelong mission to uplift others through empathy, education, and expert care. With a career spanning over a decade, Lexxie’s journey reflects a commitment to continual learning, interdisciplinary practice, and the belief that healing happens best when it’s rooted in both knowledge and compassion.

From the OR to Mental Health Advocacy

Lexxie began her nursing career in 2011 in the operating room, where she developed a strong foundation in acute care and clinical decision-making. As she pursued advanced education, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing as an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and later transitioned into the field of urology. Her path took a new direction when she realized her deeper calling lay in mental health. Lexxie went on to complete a post-master’s certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and is currently pursuing her PhD, further evidence of her dedication to addressing the growing mental health needs of individuals and communities.

Balancing Patient Care and Academic Mentorship

Today, Lexxie serves dual roles as a practicing Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Assistant Professor in the DNP-PMHNP program at the University of Illinois–Chicago. Whether she’s treating patients or mentoring future nurse practitioners, Lexxie brings authenticity, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to care. She is especially passionate about preparing the next generation of mental health providers to lead with competence and compassion. Her students consistently cite her as an inspiring role model, blending real-world experience with thoughtful, person-centered instruction.

A Philosophy Rooted in Empathy and Growth

Lexxie’s impact is not only in the clinic or classroom but in the ripple effect she creates through every patient interaction and student she mentors. “It is my passion,” she says, “to help my patients live their best lives and to encourage my students to demonstrate not only competence, but empathy and compassion when they become providers themselves.”

The Illinois Nurses Foundation proudly celebrates Lexxie Gramke as a 2025 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader for her dedication to empowering the next generation, innovative healing research, nursing education, and leadership.
