INF 40 Under 40 Awardee: Maricela Lares

Maricela Lares’ nursing career has been defined by determination, evolution, and a deep sense of purpose. What began as a career rooted in patient care as an LPN has evolved into a mission-driven path that spans rehabilitation nursing, clinical practice, and school health services. Maricela earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Morton College, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Purdue Northwest University. Most recently, she achieved her Professional Educator License with a Certified School Nurse (PEL-CSN) endorsement from Illinois State University, strengthening her ability to advocate for and care for students and families in her community.

Inspiring Through Example and Advocacy

Maricela’s journey has been fueled by her desire to set an example for her daughter and son, showing them that with passion, dedication, and commitment, any goal is possible. In her role as a school nurse, Maricela has found her true calling caring for students’ health needs, serving as a trusted resource for families, and advocating for students beyond the nurse’s office. She is particularly passionate about promoting the nursing profession within the Latin community, aiming to empower the next generation of diverse healthcare leaders.

Shaping the Future of Nursing

Looking ahead, Maricela plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing education so she can combine her clinical experience, school health expertise, and community advocacy to help prepare and mentor future nurses. As a member of both the Illinois Association of School Nurses (IASN) and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Illinois Chapter, she is committed to advancing equity, representation, and opportunity in the nursing profession. Maricela’s advice to fellow nurses and students is rooted in collaboration: “Seek out mentorship, build meaningful connections, and surround yourself with peers who share your passion for the profession. We are not alone in this journey support and collaboration are essential to growth and success in nursing.”
