INF 40 Under 40 Awardee: Amanda Murray

For Amanda Murray, nursing has been a journey of growth, advocacy, and evolution. A 2014 graduate of the University of Saint Francis, Amanda began her career at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab the same year and has continued to thrive there ever since. From starting as a student nurse to leading as the nurse manager of an inpatient traumatic brain injury unit, Amanda has embraced every opportunity to grow her skills and leadership. Today, she serves as Nurse Manager of Employee Health, a role that allows her to support not just patients but the staff who care for them.
From Patient Advocacy to Staff Wellbeing
While Amanda’s early work centered on advocating for patients and families, her focus has shifted to championing the physical and mental wellbeing of the healthcare team. In her current role, she works closely with Human Resources to strengthen support systems for staff, with a focus on workers’ compensation, ADA accommodations, and employee health initiatives. “I’ve always been passionate about advocacy,” Amanda shares. “Now, my role is to ensure that the people caring for patients feel supported, healthy, and empowered to do their best work.”
Looking Ahead
Amanda plans to further her education by pursuing a master’s degree in nursing leadership, potentially through a dual MSN/MBA program, to continue strengthening her leadership and impact. Outside of her professional life, Amanda’s most important role is being mom to her two young children, a spirited 3-year-old son and a nearly 2-year-old daughter. Alongside her husband Patrick, Amanda credits her family with inspiring her to grow and strive every day. “They keep life wonderfully full” she says. “And they motivate me to be the best version of myself for my family, my team, and the patients we ultimately serve.”
The Illinois Nurses Foundation proudly celebrates Amanda Murray as a 2025 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader for her dedication to staff advocacy, leadership, and building a sustainable and supportive healthcare environment.
