Nicholas Nowak MSN, MBA, RN, CCRN-CMC is a Clinical Lead RN at Advocate Christ Medical Center. He has been nominated for the Illinois Nurses Foundation’s 40 Under 40 Awards by Anna Auger for his passion for community health, commitment to eliminating healthcare disparities, and dedication to nursing education.
Nick has been awarded the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.
A Leader in Patient Safety and Team Development
In his role, Nick leads a skilled team of Arrhythmia nurses who collaborate to provide high-quality care to acutely ill patients. Known for his supportiveness and active engagement, Nick has earned respect and recognition from both his team members and the physicians he collaborates with. His approach to leadership emphasizes patient safety, team development, and a commitment to excellence, inspiring his colleagues to pursue the highest standards in healthcare.
One notable example of Nick’s initiative was when he identified a knowledge gap in his team regarding Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) responses. He developed a specialized workflow, medication box, and a detailed simulation-based training program for the Rapid Response Team, improving both confidence and competence in handling these high-risk situations. Nick’s training program, which included pre-education and a one-hour simulation session, led to significant retention of knowledge six months post-education. His impactful presentation on this initiative earned him the “Most Knowledgeable Presentation and Poster” award at the ACMC Nurses Week Symposium, and he was also selected as a podium presenter at the Advocate Midwest Nursing Research Conference.
Dedication to Professional Growth and Team Empowerment
Nick’s commitment to personal and professional development is evident in his recent completion of an MSN/MBA degree and his certifications in CCRN and CMC, underscoring his expertise in critical care. A leading expert in massive transfusion protocols, intraosseous vascular access, and ultrasound-guided IVs, Nick actively supports his team’s growth by encouraging certifications and further education. His passion for professional development extends to his role as chair of ACMC’s RN Lead Committee, where he represented and advocated for the needs of unit-based RN leads.
Beyond his clinical and leadership roles, Nick recently joined the United States Army Reserve as a Critical Care RN, further exemplifying his dedication to service and commitment to patient care. He also volunteers with the Andrew Weishar Foundation, offering support and encouragement to young adults battling cancer.
An Inspiring Presence Known Across ACMC
Nick is well-known at ACMC as “Nick from RRT,” a title that reflects his hands-on approach and willingness to assist others. His positive attitude and supportive nature have made him a role model for both new graduates and seasoned nurses alike. Nick’s natural ability to lead by example, combined with his effective communication skills, critical thinking, and unwavering dedication, has created a strong, supportive environment for his team.
