Transformative Leadership in Nursing Education

Dr. Garbarz serves as an Assistant Professor at Rush University, where he plays a pivotal role in educating the next generation of APNs. As the team leader for a clinical management class that spans three specialty areas, he helps students transition from learners to nurse leaders. Known for his respectful and empathetic teaching style, Dr. Garbarz has garnered high praise from both colleagues and students alike. A recent student shared that he is “an excellent teacher who communicates everything well,” a testament to his ability to mentor and inspire.

As a DNP advisor, Dr. Garbarz draws on his extensive experience in global health and working with underserved populations to guide and mentor students. His leadership is further demonstrated through his work with business and health information technology students from other universities, reflecting his commitment to fostering interprofessional collaboration. His dedication to education was recognized with the Daisy Award, a prestigious honor that celebrates educators who serve as role models and demonstrate respect for all learners.

Clinical Work in Underserved Communities

Dr. Garbarz’s clinical work exemplifies his commitment to serving vulnerable populations. He works in an underserved community on Chicago’s west side at a community health center, providing care for patients with complex medical histories impacted by multiple social determinants of health. His hands-on clinical practice serves as a powerful example for both colleagues and students, highlighting the importance of holistic care in addressing not only physical but also social factors that affect health outcomes.

Dr. Garbarz’s work in this setting underscores his belief in the power of nursing to make a difference in people’s lives, especially those who are most in need. His clinical expertise and leadership in this area inspire his students to adopt the same compassionate and comprehensive approach to care.

Leadership and Community Engagement

Dr. Garbarz is deeply involved in leadership roles across various settings. He serves as the Partnership and Clinical Training Lead for Rush’s Advanced Nursing Education Workforce program, which is funded by the Health Resource Service Administration (HRSA). Through this role, he helps ensure that APNs are equipped with the necessary training and tools to excel in their practice. He is also actively engaged with the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nurses and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, further contributing to the growth and development of the nursing profession.

Global Health Initiatives: Bridging Gaps in Healthcare

Beyond his local impact, Dr. Garbarz has made significant contributions on an international scale. His involvement with Rush’s Global Health program led him to identify critical gaps in healthcare delivery in the Dominican Republic, particularly in the area of health information technology (HIT). In response, Dr. Garbarz co-founded and served as the Executive Director of the Global Health Coalition (GHC), a non-profit organization focused on improving health outcomes in underserved global health clinics.

The GHC has developed customized, open-sourced electronic health records designed for use in environments with limited electricity and connectivity. These records allow for the tracking of quality indicators through interactive dashboards, which have already yielded positive results. For example, dozens of patients with uncontrolled hypertension in the Dominican Republic are now case-managed through collaboration with local healthcare providers, showcasing the transformative power of this technology.

Compassionate Care and Visionary Leadership

Dr. Garbarz’s work embodies the essence of nursing, which is the combination of compassionate care and skillful judgment. Whether he is providing care for underserved populations, mentoring the next generation of nurse leaders, or developing innovative solutions to global health challenges, Dr. Garbarz consistently demonstrates the heart and mind required to make a lasting impact.

His leadership in interprofessional partnerships, his dedication to improving healthcare outcomes, and his commitment to advancing the nursing profession make Dr. Garbarz a true visionary in nursing.
