Rachel Adekoya is a shining example of a visionary, transformational leader within the nursing profession. As a highly accomplished Nurse Manager at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Rachel holds numerous certifications, including rehabilitation nursing, medical-surgical nursing, and Nurse Executive. Her academic credentials are equally impressive, holding a Master of Science in Nursing.
Rachel has been nominated for the 2024 Illinois Nurses foundation 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award. Designed to highlight young nurses that are making a
lasting difference in the healthcare industry, this award
celebrates those who shape the future of nursing.
Rebuilding and Leadership in Crisis
Rachel’s leadership prowess first became apparent when she took over as the manager of the Nerve, Muscle & Bone Innovation Center, a position she held for two years. Prior to this role, she had filled interim leadership positions across multiple units at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, demonstrating her adaptability and competence. When the previous manager of the unit left abruptly, Rachel seamlessly stepped in, rebuilding and reshaping the team during a challenging transition. Her commitment to fostering a positive work environment paid off as she cultivated a highly engaged and motivated team, despite the influx of new employees.
Rachel’s management style is deeply rooted in emotional intelligence. She has become a strong source of support and mentorship for her staff, creating a safe and open environment where her team feels heard, valued, and respected. This emotional connection has strengthened the team’s unity, creating an atmosphere where collaboration thrives.
Collaborative Approach and Expanding Responsibilities
One of Rachel’s hallmark achievements is fostering collaboration between nursing and allied health, a strategy that has improved both patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. Recognizing her talent for leadership and team-building, Rachel was entrusted with the additional responsibility of managing the inpatient hemodialysis unit. Taking on this extra responsibility voluntarily, she exemplified her dedication to the hospital’s mission and her deep commitment to the well-being of her patients and staff.
In February 2024, Rachel was further promoted to oversee the outpatient nursing department at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. This department required strong leadership to establish structure, improve processes, and adopt a shared governance approach, all of which Rachel was more than capable of delivering. Her ability to develop a strong, cohesive nursing unit speaks to her strategic vision and her relentless pursuit of excellence.
An Advocate for Nursing and Community Engagement
Beyond her managerial role, Rachel has consistently demonstrated her passion for promoting the nursing profession. She successfully initiated the rollout of the prestigious Daisy Award at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a program that honors the extraordinary efforts of nurses. Her involvement in professional organizations is extensive—Rachel is an active member of the Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders (IONL), where she completed the Nursing Leadership Fellowship, and she is also part of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). She attended the Nurse Manager Institute and remains engaged with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Magnet team, even participating in their conferences.
Rachel’s commitment to mentorship extends into the community through her volunteer work with the Walk on Water Ministry. Since 2017, she has mentored teens in their program, educating them about the nursing profession and encouraging them to consider a future in healthcare. Her ability to connect with people of all ages highlights her empathetic nature and her belief in the power of nursing to positively impact society.
